As an engineer I work with millions and millions of rows of data which can be very intimidationg. With the help of Spotfire I am easily able to arrange this data within visualizations that help me understand it and draw conclusions. It is also very easy to switch between the visualizations to facilitate quick learning. The scope of my use case is daily usage with auto updated data within the tool.
  • Visaulization Sugggestion
  • Ability to set many filters
  • Great way to collaborate with
  • Documentation can be more helpful
  • Add custom property controls when importing data
  • Can be very slow as size of data grows
This is very well suited for detailed implementation of data analytics. Youc an have thousands of rows of data and with the help of spotfire you can get descriptive stats and vizualizations.

It is not as convenient for quick data analysis as the over head is too much, I prefer excel for that

In R&D we have different departments, and we use Spotfire for our studies in the electronic Trial Master file (eTMF) department to see the cleanliness and completeness of eTMFs. We also use it to measure progress towards KPIs and targets, and to prioritize actions.
  • It's very easy to filter data you want, and what you want to see
  • Lot of visualization options
  • It's very fast
  • enabling various scripts like Python etc should be a built-in feature of Spotfire
It is well suited when you want to present visual data to management, and i would say also to end users because of details on demand and raw data.

We use Spotfire for staff as a cross section of users across the organization. It enables faster, simpler, and more timely reporting and analysis information sharing to those that need it daily and weekly.
  • Easy template spreadsheet reports and charting for daily consumption
  • Easy deployment of new features to users
  • Easy application updating to users when addressing bugs in the app
  • Ability to leverage emailing reports automatically for staff in office and away
  • Upgrading the product is still clunky.
  • Support website to search is poor. Google is friendlier to find what I need
  • More granularity for permissions to the library
  • Improve web player design to current web standards
For small companies, Spotfire is expensive to get into. Other players are more cost-conscious. There is a huge learning curve to start, if it's new to you.

Spotfire is an amazing choice as a BI Analytics platform. It provides end to end solution of all Data Analytics needs, with all cutting age modern technology integrations available. It is a solution as a whole or as a small piece of implementation. It offers compete control over the components and a rich API to automate it. Developers feel empowered and are free to choose technology of their choice like TERR, Python, IronPython, JavaScript etc.; and without much learning curve they can start contributing with the help of their existing skill-set. Spotfire is a scalable, trust worthy, available and secure platform as a Summary.
  • Innovation
  • Availability of trending technology
  • Integrations with Data Science Platforms
  • Easy to use
  • Complete control over different components
  • They should introduce Python native visualizations
  • Learning Materials for basic and Intermediate level should be made free. This helps to attract and onboard new users.
  • Jupyter integration will be a great improvement.
  • There should be approach available for parallel development. For Example, Two person should be able to edit and save same dashboard if they are working with different components.
I was asked to analyze a huge distributed data set and it was no feasible to develop Data Model level that quickly. Spotfire's scripting capabilities helped a lot to convert the requirements in to a feasible requirement, it allowed to programmatically read data, dynamically transform and visualize on the fly. This was not feasible with other tools, without having a data layer established. This saved a lot of time.

Our products are built in Spotfire leveraging the TERR and Python engines that are natively supported by Spotfire. We utilize Spotfire for not only our product development, but consult on the implementation and analytics for a variety of clients using the product internally within their organizations. Business problems include analytics, machine learning, accounting/finance, and petroleum engineering workflows.
  • Machine learning
  • Advanced modeling
  • Data visualization
  • Data ingestion & ETL
  • Levels of customization for certain elements
  • HTML sanitation removal
  • Handling replacement data and the downstream impacts on data functions
Spotfire works well for handling everything from simple to highly complex and large datasets. Geospatial data works especially well, as the geospatial analytics capability afforded by Spotfire is second to none. We have migrated many workflows that were previously performed in Excel using pivot tables to within Spotfire. This has enabled us to increase efficiently and capability when analyzing new data.

Spotfire is Great

We use Spotfire mainly to display data in the form of dashboards. It is used by us to make decisions on plan changes by advising whether new production plans are realistic and in line with past performance. Various inputs can be quickly changed if the production plan isn’t realistic and then a new review of the dashboard occurs. Having unrealistic plans causes waste in the supply chain.
  • Easy to create new dashboards
  • Display data in an easy to digest form
  • Ability to change views on the fly
  • Initial Load time is slow
  • Graphs aren’t always visually appealing
  • More options for input data sources
We use Spotfire to display data for management. Management often needs information presented in different forms. In meetings with them, they will often ask for data to be arranged in contrasting modes and Spotfire allows for this to be done seamlessly and on the fly.

We use Spotfire to create a dashboard for our end-user. We run several simulation and ML models on other tools like SAS, store the outputs on a SQL database and present the results on a Spotfire dashboard for our internal customers. We also use Spotfire for several spot checks and quick analyses.
  • Enterprise-wide license
  • A lot of options to connect to many databases
  • Help tools
  • The UI can be simpler. Tableau is a lot simpler and neater.
  • Options for animations. Sheets like Tableau have it.
  • Options for geospatial mapping.
I think Spotfire would be very useful for a new user who is getting into data visualization. But it’s not a great tool if you want to do [anything] really complicated - need visualization experiments or dashboards. I think Tableau is a lot better. It is a lot easier and more visually appealing.

Spotfire is used by many business teams across our organization for reporting and visualization requirements. The dashboards serve many end users for their daily updates and business requirements. The required data comes from different data sources, and users access Spotfire to examine daily changes and impact on their business needs. Also, it allows them to download data and visualizations that can be used for presentations.
  • Easy to build reports and visualizations.
  • Simplifies the process of data federation by allowing definition of data models and information links.
  • Spotfire provides [an] easy way for end users to dig deeper and manage data.
  • Provide data lineage maps that would help developers.
  • More drag and drop functions that facilitate development efforts.
  • Need more administrative tasks such as ability to see user activity in structured manners.
Spotfire is well suited in areas where ad-hoc analysis need to be performed and results can be displayed in different visualization formats.

It is being used in three areas. Advanced Analytics, Pricing, and Marketing. Across the three business units Spotfire is an analytics tool, whereas Tableau is used for reporting dashboards.
  • It has the best coding integration (python, R) of any BI product
  • The ability to work with very large datasets (10 mil+) is better than competitors
  • Export options are more complete and have better functionality
  • The data canvas is the best tool to join and transform data vs. competitors
  • User interface is less intuitive and changes are more visual than functional.
  • Dedicated settings to build solutions for mobile would be appreciated.
  • More statistical and analytics functions would be good. The list has been static for a while.
Spotfire is a more capable analytics tool than Tableau or PowerBI, for example. It makes analysis accessible to non-analytics users and augments Excel well. It also blends data very well. The learning curve is a little steeper but otherwise it best suited for analytics professionals looking to provide visualizations to their work.

We use Spotfire in order to display a large amount of data in a user-friendly and [fast] way. This is the key of our product: visualization with data rows from 2M to 5M that load information in less than 50 seconds. We are starting to work with Predictive and R, but we are very excited about the benefits we can get with this platform. [It is] a very intuitive developer platform, and not so complex but powerful enough for most of the things. Many solutions out there have the power too, but they are not user friendly or cost effective.
  • Web player data visualization. They are pretty fast with low server requirements.
  • Visualization needs to be from this age. They look sometimes like Office 95. Maybe embedded the Jviz D3 visualization, or integration with Google visualizations.
It's less appropriate if data is not set for performance. If the data table is not set to be rows, but more columns, it is a pain to use it on Spotfire. It behaves excellently if data load fast enough. It can manage itself as a stand-alone platform but can also be integrated with others. One visualization of one variable to analyze, this is the rule on Spotfire visualizations. More than that, most of the time, is not possible.

Spotfire is being used by our team to serve as a KPI dashboard for various clients to show the performance on their data using analytics. It is also being used to create new visualizations that can further highlight how the data can be viewed and further sliced into smaller chunks to be able to dive deeper into it.
  • Better Visualizations.
  • Data extraction options are easier to use.
  • Fast and slick performance.
  • Sometimes the customization features in the visualizations can be difficult to work with.
  • Data loading performance is not always the best.
  • Lack of material design and newer UI features.
Well suited for the following scenarios: KPI dashboard design -- It is very helpful in designing dashboards which highlight KPIs showing data in different forms and visualizations. Multi-page layout -- For scenarios where the data is supposed to be viewed in different pages, Spotfire can help. Slicing and dicing data to view different pivots -- Spotfire can show the data in various ways which helps in creating custom KPIs and visualization. Not well suited for the following scenarios: Flashy UI -- Spotfire does not have the design features or customization to use complex or flashy UI features. Larger datasets -- Spotfire has lagged performance when used with extremely large datasets.

Organization usage: focused in development and operations departments.

Business Problems:
  • Visualization of operations metrics such as production tracking.
  • Data QC.
  • Prototype advanced analytical approaches.
  • Interactive visualizations ("Brush UI").
  • Data wrangling interface.
  • Search function for Spotfire features.
  • Steep learning curve.
  • Self help options confusing - online help is convoluted; inline help is mediocre.
  • Trellis by a hierarchy or custom grouping of categories.
Well Suited:
  • Data exploration including with the recommendation engine - these are useful reminders of perhaps hidden configurations of the base plots.
  • Distributing custom code via data functions.
  • Builds very nicely off a standard data platform such as TDV.
Poorly suited:
  • Not fully multi-user: risks in active collaboration on a Spotfire project and potential saving over each other's work.
  • Standalone not a strong data analytics tool - we've had to customize/augment with custom code or statistica.

Spotfire is widely used in my current, previous, and a few other organizations where I worked as a consultant. It helped the management and various departments to see the overall and detailed picture of their business. It helps to identify the problematic area and make necessary business decisions that help the company to better perform in a cost-effective manner. It is used by several departments. Example: Production Department was able to keep track of the overall daily production. They are able to analyze the declining curve, able to analyze production at pad level, well level, etc. Land Department was able to keep track of the various documents that their department is processing in a day. The accounting department was able to keep track of the LOE. There are several other departments that uses this product to see their overall performance of their departments. This is a great product.
  • Great visualization.
  • Retrieval of data by connecting to various sources like MSSQL Server, Access, Excel, Oracle, Txt file.
  • Handling of many millions of records.
  • Good security features.
  • I see some areas where Spotfire can do an improvement when we do grouping. I see spotfire executes multiple times the same query for the grouping, instead if we can execute onetime get the data will be much more efficient. When executing the same query over and over again for many million rows is time consuming which slows down the performance of Spotfire.
I would say in every company they should use Spotfire to get an overall idea about the business. This is a highly recommended tool. I don't think it is suitable for a very small organization where things can be managed by other tools. This is well suited in an organization with millions of turn overs and high cash flow.

The solution is used by my department for data exploration, data analytics, visualization, and reporting purposes. As data analytic solution providers, we aim to know the tool as much as we can, we use it every day, for various purposes. Our main goal is to explore the different use cases the solution can solve, the various data sources the tool can connect to, and the different variations of analytical and visual methods, the tool can offer to its users. Also, we continuously evaluate the performance of the tool and compare it to other similar solutions so that we can always offer the best solution to our clients.
  • The fact that R can be implemented and used within Spotfire.
  • Various data connectors that provide seamless connections to a huge number of data sources from Spotfire.
  • An extremely powerful product, yet it's very easy to learn how to use it even on an advanced level.
  • Great user community and customer support.
  • Performance issues when it comes to very large data sets.
  • Spotfire is quite expensive compared to similar tools on the market.
  • The selection of visualization could be better and bigger.
Spotfire can be well suited in organizations where there is a demand for continuous analysis and reporting of data (e.g.: pricing analysis of products in different regions), or for interactive management reporting. It can, however, be less appropriate in situations where fancy visualizations and sophisticated BI reports would be required, as Spotfire is not too strong in providing such visuals and reports compared to other similar (BI) products.

We usually use Spotfire to process, visualize and analyze large field datasets, this data most of the time is near real-time engineering data. We do pull flows, pressure and temp data and perform many ad-hoc calculations trying to address causation most of the time.
  • The power of Spotfire comes from its ability to perform multi-level filtering that is tied back to your data everywhere so you don't need to re-implement your filters again.
  • I see Spotfire standing in the middle between being a Data Vis. or Data Analytics platform and that's what sets it apart from Alteryx, Tableau and Power BI.
  • The ability of Spotfire to host R and Python is another great strong point that gives the users huge flexibility to implement anything they can't find, not to mention its great custom expressions interface. I am not sure about other platforms but I was able to process 8M rows data very easily.
  • More enhancement to produce combination plots (Scatter+Line)
  • Add support for GGPLOT library in R
  • Edit curves individually
  • Pulling sensor or OSISoft Data and performing in-house calculation
  • Dashboards design whether online or offline
  • Interactive applications and dashboards
  • Data Wrangling and geospatial overlaying

Oil and gas firm doing operational, reservoir and financial analysis. I use it to look at results from risk for monte carlo simulations of hedging results on a financial model. Spotfire allows us to visualize multivariable analysis across a 1 million row database quickly and easily. It is quick to do and allows easy configuration.
  • Intuitive to use
  • Fast to get what you want.
  • Results look very professional and presentable
  • Expressions and some nomenclature can be hard - espically for a non technical background
  • Data integration and importing seems to be behind the curve to Tableau
  • This could be good or bad - but the interface even after changing to version 10, has not changed all that much since early versions - 7 years ago or so.
Spotfire has the oil and gas market covered - which makes it an industry standard vs competitor products (Tableau, Microsoft BI)

By using Spotfire, I could collaborate with people from another department to analyze the same set of clinical data, and often times, that helped us to look at the same data with different angles and thus providing fresh insights. Definitely more interactive and real-time compared to email for example. When data is updated, it is also updated real-time, so it helps with version control.
  • Interactive
  • Provides a trail for others to follow how a particular analysis was done
  • Version control
  • Some limitations on customization of the graphics but not an issue
Great for visualization of complex datasets without having to learn scripting. Not so good if the data itself needs to be cleaned, adjusted, merged, etc., before visualization.

We utilised Spotfire to help analyse results from complex observational assessments to help identify opportunities for efficiency, financial and CEX improvements across customer care and back-office operations. We built each tool and methods we defined allowing us to take data from pre-defined studies and actually start analysing results mid data capture. The dashboards we created allowed us to evidence any need for change and associated impact in seconds, while also provided a portal where clients can access our finished dashboards as a takeaway document, alongside traditional excel and PowerPoint documents.
  • Data transformation such as Pivots and Unpivots were a key feature.
  • The ability to self publish and manage dashboards without IT support allowed us to be very agile when delivering projects.
  • Custome calculation functions, with supported rules and built-in error checking, made the process very intuitive.
  • Combining graphs and objects into the same space was impossible.
  • Making things look pretty was not as easy as some other projects.
  • Export functionality was lacking.
  • No market place for community built visuals.
  • UI design a little different to most products, increases learning time.
Great tool for hosting and publishing dynamic dashboards, the ability to structure inputs and replicate for similar projects made our lives much easier and increased efficiency.

We are using Spotfire across the company to calculate and analyze the risk assessment of multiple clients. With the use of this amazing product, we saved our clients almost 80% of their loss due to theft. We also helped them in analyzing their stored data to figure out which store is doing good and which needs attention. Previously, we used other reporting tools, and migrated all our reports to Spotfire some four years ago. The main advantage we see is that the reports run faster than other reporting tools, we can connect to multiple databases, calculated columns are cached in the report so that it increases your report speed, and many more.
  • Reports load faster than any other reporting tools, and your data can be cached in the memory to avoid the processing time.
  • It supports almost all the data sources available, which is lacking in other tools.
  • It supports Html, Java, R, and Iron Python coding. That means that you can customize your dashboards in whatever way you want them to be.
  • It can deal with more than 100 million records without a delay in loading.
  • Sometimes, visualizations save the values. For example, if you change the column name in column properties, that affects the axis in visualization, but not the "limit data by expression" in the properties data tab.
  • Like some visualization tools, we need to have detailed visualization in hovering the mouse pointer on the main visualization.
  • We need to have the option to auto-size your Text area UI to whichever device screen you are using. Currently, it is not auto fitting to different screen sizes.
It is well suited if you are working with large sets of data. I would say greater than a million. It is also well suited if you are working with data that refreshes more frequently and data that is not clean enough (so you can create calculated columns and clean on the fly). It is not suited if your data is never going to refresh (better to use an Excel kind of reporting service). It is also not suited if you like to see fancy looking charts like performance meter, donut chart etc. It is suited more if you want to work with predictive analysis using R or Python scripting

  • Fast way to create dashboards and share these with others
  • Ease of use, also for staff that is new to the product, very self learning GUI
  • No cons, at the moment, it provides the requirements that I need to do my job.
Well suited to provide on the spot data manipulation for instance during a meeting.
